CNS Infections A Clinical Approach, Second Edition 2018

 2019

This book describes a practical approach to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infectious complications in solid-organ transplant (SOT) candidates and recipients, based on both up-to-date clinical evidence and state of the art expert opinion from world-renowned experts in the field. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which explains risk assessment and the general approach to infectious diseases in the pre-, peri-, and early and late post-transplant periods. The remaining two sections address the prevention and treatment of infection with particular pathogens and the management of specific syndromes, such as pneumonia, CNS infections, UTIs, and skin infections.
Infections in SOT recipients – often due to multidrug-resistant organisms – represent a major challenge. Preventive strategies need to be adapted according to the type of allograft and period after transplantation. Moreover, toxicity and drug interaction with immunosuppressive drugs must be taken into consideration when treating infectious complications. In explaining in depth how best to ensure allograft and patient survival, this book will be of value to infectious disease specialists and transplant physicians at all levels of experience

Clear-Cutting Disease Control Capital-Led Deforestation, Public Health Austerity, and Vector-Borne Infection 2018

 2018

The vector-borne Zika virus joins avian influenza, Ebola, and yellow fever as recent public health crises threatening pandemicity.
By a combination of stochastic modeling and economic geography, this book proposes two key causes together explain the explosive spread of the worst of the vector-borne outbreaks.

Ecosystems in which such pathogens are largely controlled by environmental stochasticity are being drastically streamlined by both agribusiness-led deforestation and deficits in public health and environmental sanitation.

Consequently, a subset of infections that once burned out relatively quickly in local forests are now propagating across susceptible human populations whose vulnerability to infection is often exacerbated in structurally adjusted cities. The resulting outbreaks are characterized by greater global extent, duration, and momentum.
As infectious diseases in an age of nation states and global health programs cannot, as much of the present modeling literature presumes, be described by interacting populations of host, vector, and pathogen alone, a series of control theory models is also introduced here. These models, useful to researchers and health officials alike, explicitly address interactions between government ministries and the pathogens they aim to control.

Drug Interactions in Infectious Diseases Antimicrobial Drug Interactions, Fourth Edition 2018

 2018

The 4th edition of Drug Interactions in Infectious Diseases is being split into two separate volumes – “Mechanisms and Models of Drug Interactions” and “Antimicrobial Drug Interactions”.
This volume, “Mechanisms and Models of Drug Interactions,” delivers a text that enhances clinical knowledge of the complex mechanisms, risks, and consequences of drug interactions associated with antimicrobials, infection, and inflammation. The book provides a comprehensive review of basic clinical pharmacology with a focus on metabolism and transporter-mediated drug interactions. The chapters address materials that cannot be retrieved easily in the medical literature, including materials focused on the complex interrelationship of acute infection, inflammation, and the risk of drug interactions in the Drug-Cytokine chapter. The Food-Drug and Herb-Drug interactions chapters remain definitive resources. A new chapter on in vitro modeling of drug interactions is included along with updates on design and data analysis of clinical drug interaction studies. Authoritative discussion of models for regulatory decision-making on drug-drug interactions provides the necessary framework to aid antimicrobial drug development. This concise review of the mechanisms and models of drug interactions provides important insights to health care practitioners as well as scientists in drug development.

Salmonella Enterica 2018

 2018

The bacterium Salmonella enterica is a serious bacterial pathogen and causative agent of salmonellosis infections on a worldwide scale. Many clinical isolates of S. entericaS. enterica. Following this, the strengths and limitations of the available molecular tools for effective epidemiological assessment of foodborne salmonellae are collected and critically discussed. Such integration would allow accurate identification of both infection source and transmission route that would lead to implementation of effective control measures. Additionally, the role of Salmonella enterica as a possible therapeutic alternative in the fight against cancer. Although Salmonella enterica tumor selectivity remains unclear, pre-clinical and clinical trials have shown its localization in solid, semi-solid and metastatic tumors. The final chapter reviews some mechanisms and recent trends in the spread of multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica. serovar in Nigeria. Antibiotic use both in animal and human medicine and environmental factors, all have a role in the emergence, persistence and spread of resistance.

Infectious Diseases and Arthropods 2018

With the exception of a few tropical medicine schools worldwide, current medical education programs include almost zero discussion of the interface between infectious diseases and entomology. That is why this book was initially published in the first edition almost 17 years ago.
The third edition of this valuable infectious disease entomology book updates all existing chapters with the newest scientific developments described in the medical and entomological literature in addition to covering 10 entirely new topics not addressed in previous editions, which include:

· arthropod identification controversies
· early beginnings of public health and disease control
· red-meat allergy
· updates on vaccine development for dengue and malaria
· discussion of Chikungunya and Zika viruses
· American Boutonnneuse Fever
· the newest controversies in Lyme disease
· recent findings of viruses in ticks
· bed bug bite reactions
